Its difficult when you are judged by others. Not many people have the time of day to care. Several things I've learned over the years is that if you care, you recieve kindness in return. There are many ways to behave in public, you can be outright extrovert or be reserved. Do what's comfortable.
You meet a number of people during the day and most of the time don't engage in a conversation unless you know the person. Sometimes, we are shy and that bashfullness keeps you away. It is this self restraint mechanism that protects you from danger.
A visit to the local pub would do many a good as the self restraint mechanism slowly fades away. You let your guard down and socialising seems so much easier. Obviously, you learn to do this best on your own terms. Some people resort to alcohol, some resort to other substances.
Whatever you do, just be sure to know yourself and your limits. I often enjoy a good chat with a close friend and that alone is fulfillment.
Freedom comes with responsibilility and life is best when you appreciate what you have, and not what your mind's eye is set on.
