As the leaders of the next generation, the young in Malaysia often fail to appreciate the independence brought by Tunku who won the the first federal elections held in 1955.
The UMNO-MCA-MIC Alliance, headed by Tunku Abdul Rahman, won an overwhelming victory (51 out of the 52 seats contested), and the Tunku was appointed the Federation's first Chief Minister. The Alliance was successful in pressuring the British to relinquish their sovereignty in August 1957.
Now that Malays and Malaysians alike have independence, we should take the intitiative to progress forward and not be caught up in social agendas. Many of the young are influenced by the circular way of thinking. It is the fortunate few whom have experienced the battle ground who rarely emerge victorious through this circle of life.
I am sure back in 1957, the act of rejoicing together celebrating independence was a funfilled ocaasion. Today, fun seems to be no longer located in the same meaning as the word suggests in the English Dictionary.
What we can't afford to do is lose the same fight our forefathers started during the second world war right through the Federation of the Malaysian states in 1963. The continuance rememberance and sacrifice of them should always be in our minds each day that progresses. If we lose the desire to protect the independence which was fought 49 years ago, Malaysia shall be no more.
Let us rejoice in the name of the country and put away ill fated feelings behind. A united front is best for all. We celebrate independence once a year when it should really be a daily objective. Each day Malaysians move forward is another day fruitful.
Muhammad.
