Karen Berman: Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean

  • Harvard University Press: Financial Intelligence
CFO.com "It's like The Elements of Style of finance." Book Description Understanding the Financials—and What Lies Behind Them Managers in every business are expected to use financial data to make decisions, allocate resources, and budget expenses. But the truth is, many are uncomfortable applying the most basic financial tools in their day-to-day work. Even managers who consider themselves financially savvy may not understand what goes into a financial statement, and so may take the numbers as gospel when they should be questioning them. In Financial Intelligence, Karen Berman and Joe Knight present the essentials of finance, but with an extra dimension. Succinct, easy-to-read chapters teach the fundamentals in a way that everyone can understand and put to work right away. But the authors also take you behind the scenes, to show where the numbers come from. Since nobody can quantify everything, accountants and finance executives always rely on estimates, assumptions, and judgment calls, which can skew the numbers in one direction or another. This book helps you recognize and understand those biases, challenge or correct for them when necessary, and use this information to be a better manager. Based on their work training tens of thousands of managers and employees at many leading organizations, Berman and Knight provide readers with a deep understanding of: The basics of financial measurement: reading income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and moreThe art of finance: separating hard data from assumptions and estimatesThe mechanics of analysis: calculating ratios, return on investment, and working capitalCash and profit: knowing the difference between them, and why cash is suddenly the "hot" number in corporate boardrooms and on Wall StreetFinancial literacy and transparency: recognizing how they can boost performance Accessible, jargon-free, and filled with entertaining stories from real companies, Financial Intelligence will help nonfinancial managers add substantially more to their companies’—and their own—success. If you have ever wanted to "talk numbers" confidently with your colleagues, this is the book for you. (*****)

A globally developed world...

I am fortunate to be in a world where recognition and excellence is recognised amongst other things.

Countries like the U.S are independent to a certain extent. They are not prohibited by reaching their  objectives which is to be the global superpower of the world. Without the U.S the world we live in would be far worst than it is.

The stereotype in Asia and the middle east is that the U.S is responsible for the wars of the 21st century. Needless to say, the people responsible for waging war are the very same people who created 10 billion dollars in government treasury notes back in 1900 which has fueled the national debt to trillions of dollars in deficit.

The war today is not against Islam, the war we wage today is against cyberterrorism.

Digital economies can no longer be sustained as private sector companies are tied with government agencies and are clearly open to cyberattacks from outside state borders.

If a hacker from China can gain access to the state department and homeland security databases, they can access documents promoting illegal immigration. Once these threats are beyond the borders, they become imminent and can purport serious harm.

Crime exists in all economies but they are becoming more apparent in developed economies because illegal immigration allows unscrupoulous foreign nationals into the borders who excercise criminal activities such as money laundering and acts of terrorism. These nationals do not have a value based system. Their goal is only the dollar and nothing beyond.

The war on terrorism has stricken immigration controls but monitoring billions of inhabitants on earth will be near to impossible especially through the many thousand airports, seaports and borders around the globe.

Intelligence professionals sacrifice their daily lives for the betterment of society, these acclaimed few should always be remembered and compensated appropriately for their undoubted and unquestionable service to the world at large.

Don't wage war because of religion and self belief, instead wage war within yourselves as the true enemy is not with others but really within.

The Ugly Heads of Malaysia...

Defending UMNO in Malaysia today is defending a lost cause. The NEP has failed to ensure that Malays progress to date on par and this handicap should be removed permenantly to ensure the Malays move along adequately and independently.

The scene in Malaysian politics is extremely tainted. Money politics is not a crime, there has been no special legislation to date to convict high profiled politicians who have been found guilty on graft charges. Why bother complaining about politicians who are allegedly corrupted when the political scene is synonymous with political lobbying, political killing and the infamous term of 'money politics'.

The recent parliamentary democracy crisis to hit the state of Perak might be duplicated in other states when opposition MP's are offered an purchased on printed notes to ensure that the current coalition who has formed government continue to be in power.

When there is a reason to speak out and hold healthy demonstrations, the police get involved uncessarily. The police are not independent.
The newly formed Commission on fighting corruption is not independent. The person heading this comission cannot even succeed in educating his own son when caught in flying into Australia carrying Child Pornography and has also been convicted in a foriegn court.

As long as Malaysia is headed by ugly heads within and outside government and the primary goal is to enrich their own coffers by stealing and reaping resources from public accounts and government sponsored contracts, the future of Malaysia will no longer be far off from the state of Indonesia during the reign of Suharto.

The super rich get wealthier, and the poor continue their endless strife. This disparity will continue as self preservation becomes evidently more important rather than upholding real social responsibilities that continue to perish today.

The de-facto PM has very big shoes to fill and I am confident the current line up in UMNO today will not help Malaysia reach its true potential of being a globally developed state in the years to come as long as thier political agendas do not change and their hearts remain darkened, hardened and corrupt.

The Security Service

Clandestine operations always guarantee 100% sucess. They are covert operations which are run in the shadows far hidden from the public. In comparison this is similar to the British Constitution. It is hidden and not visible to the public - Lord Scarman.

Why make a career out of this exclusive industry where people are highly sought after and the pay is stupendously low. If you believe in making a difference, ergo wanting to make a change in society, you can contribute according to your own strengths.

The War in the middle east namely Iraq and Afghanistan are not won on sheer might. The Marine Corp are there to protect civilians and to show that the U.S is still the world's superpower. It is.

Covert Operations coordinated by an array of agents and with the help of technology which range from digital communications interception to visual aids from the sky (UAV's) are used widely to gather intelligence.

The War in Iraq cannot be won by firefights and roadside bombs. It is a war on intelligence. A war of information. Secrets should never be revealed but at the right price, it can be bought including paying it with lives. Casualties of war.

Malaysia is a very young country and cannot comprehend issues of the world today because its internal politics are in shambles. There is no longer an issue of a consitutional crisis affecting Malaysia, but a crisis of parliamentary democracy.

When you have members of parliament switching camps after a landslide victory in March 08', it is plausible that they have been paid off to lose the 3 seats hereby making Barisan Nasional, the government, taking control. However there is no evidence to support this. It is only speculation.

This is illustrated through the Chief Minister of Perak losing his seat because 3 members of Pakatan Rakyat switched to an independent party. If you believe in serving the people, why change camps at the very last minute?

As long as Malaysian internal politics are a continous show of political killing in the name of preserving a lost cause, they will never be globally competent in relation to globalisation and modernization.

The Global War on Terrorism is close to world war 3 and it continues today covertly.

Malaysia has to step up and be transparent and ensure that the public coffers return to the people and not be held in the hands of people in power today.

Deepest Condolences

It is rather shocking to know that life can end for us instantaneously. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to know when we will die as an example of a medical circumstance.

It is important to cherish the one we love because when they are gone we often regret. Make the best of now so the future is not loss.

I am truly sorry that you had to lose the dearest soul you had. I can't imagine the hurt that you are experiencing. Be patient and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

When I lost someone dear to me. I was lost for a long time. Coming to terms with death is a long an ardous process. The dreams make you feel as if they are alive but they are gone when you wake up.

Be brave, be strong and most importantly don't lose yourself.

Love always.

You're the one...

It was a clear day in December 2002 at No. 12 Jalan 5/3 Taman TAR. You came accompanied by your parents and we exchanged phone numbers for the first time. From there on we talked, we laughed, we enjoyed each other's company. We didnt date. This is perhaps due to my womanly upbringing. Being the eldest son in the family doesnt help.

At 22, most young males are clueless. Partying on at Backroom at that age didnt help. However, I did manage to meet those that mattered most. I can't believe routines on dance floors and podiums used to be the limelight.

I must admit my mind was not screwed on properly but then who's was? Working at family owned companies as an employee didnt help. They put me to work as a slave in my own. I had no access. I put in a request to requisition a black E46 M3 from Naza World but it was not delivered. The current CEO continued to behave like my mom. Finally after having bought BMW, I was given a white E92 M3 which I had only driven in the showroom just 6 months ago before the merry mishaps of June 25 2008.

If they wanted to make my life easy. I would have been a pro-golfer at 22 living at Dua Residency driving my E92 M3 and working at the U.S Embassy. Instead they locked me up in HBKL and ensured I had no future. What a bunch of tossers. They say I brought this onto myself. I ask this question, then why do others in my stature not receive the same treatment? Why put me through hell? Why take away the comfort of being loved from your other half?

I made a mistake of not moving out at 22. I should have and eloped with you back then. But how could I, when you were already dating a pro-golfer! So as time went by, we lost touch. I lost your number which doesnt seem to be ringing anymore except for an irritating operator that says your number can't be connected. Come 24, it was 2004 I saw you again for Dr. Wrath Vitamins I think and we didnt do nothing. It was so goddamned difficult to connect.

Then came 2005 and London, England. This is when I truly realised you were the one for me. Being on my own at Sussex Squre made me realise what a fool I have been, hence why I got back in touch. Since then you have made it pretty damned difficult.

2007 was the time spent being brainwashed by my parents on why I should stay away from you. Each time I made contact, I would be threathened to be sent to HBKL, believe me. All I wanted was to take you out to dinner. Why do you think I have been calling 'him' and explaining what has been going on between the families all this while? to please him? come on!

2008 was a bad year and I went to HBKL because of you for the 3rd time! How can any man stand such torture.

2009 is a whole new ball game. The future is ours.

I love you J.A.A.

The Journey of a legal student.

A graduate of Economics, an avid technologist and a prominent figure embarks his career not to long ago and found that life has much to offer. Working for people requires much patience and being in the position to serve is a choice many are tied to. The employment contract is close to contracts of slavery for many corporations around the globe, needless to say, developing countries like Malaysia where an abundance of cheap labour is readily available.

For somebody whom is close to the age of 30 and has not much to show in terms of successful life achievements, will be a big let down for any set of parents. Nobody is perfect.

The path to a career change was already written. 2005 was a great year where I made the decision to leave the corporate arena in search of a discipline, law.

Leaving Malaysia and coming to live in England was the best decision that has ever happened.

A society that is closed and rigid like Malaysia is no place for an intelligent mind to realise its full potential.

Instead, family decide to restrain this very mind with anti-psychotic drugs to restrict its way of thinking and permanently causing the mind to be flatlined. Where does Malaysian law cover this area of mental health for people whom are forced to undergo brainwashing sessions with shrinks other than those whom have been handpicked to serve for intelligence agencies around the world. Psychological Black Ops are coordinated and undetected in many countries. Corrupt developing countries like Malaysia have plenty.

For a young asian country like Malaysia, the citizens lack self education and do not realise invidual rights as inferred in western countries. The Human Rights Act 1998 implemented in the UK which governs European Convention rights are a good example.

Article 2 ECHR - Right to life states that all inviduals are given a basic right to life and equality.

This basic right is non-existent in Malaysia as dictators and corrupt government officials are allowed to bulldoze the nation and reap its resources dry. The powerful reign and the weak are undermined.

There is no court in Malaysia which is in line as the European Court of Justice where invidual actions can be taken to light. Those who continue to listen are powerless to make a difference for themselves and will be the victims whilst those whom realise the cruelty that have been comitted to them take necessary action to obtain justice.

What is the point of stealing the crown when you know its not rightfully yours. What is the point of absolute power when you do not deserve it. What is the point of family when you only destroy the future of those whom you claim to love.

Self Preservation is the only way forward.

Happy Birthday to a very special 31 year old.

Its been almost a whole year since my last entry. I've been meaning to log in a post but have been saving it for today where a very special someone turns 31.

Undoubtedly it has proven to be a very difficult year indeed. In terms of unexpected events, 2008 has been full of them. I cannot begin to speak in words that would describe the most daunting experiences of my life when you have fought full on for what you believe in most.

These life experiences are priceless and I shall never forget what certain quarters are capable of planning and executing.

I owe it to myself to pull my life out of this godforsaking rut and back into the fast lane where everything made sense. June 25 2008 was a very dark day and has been the mark of my downfall since.

Almost 6 months down the line, my health is affected and my life is in dissaray. All that has been hoped remains to be seen.

All I can look forward to is knowing what I have gone through is real and that those closest to you can pose the worst threats unimaginable.

Happy Birthday ****

Love,

Thinking as ONE.

As blissful as relationships can be, there is nothing compared to sharing the same soul and mind of another. It is quoted from the first chapter of the story of the prophet P.B.U.H that Adam and Eve share the same ONE soul. Allah created Adam from clay and Eve from his backbone. Together they procreated and established mankind as we all know it to date.

Procreating is a necessity in Islam to ensure future success of our Ummah. Malaysia today has many challenges and these can be overcome with strong self belief, impeccable religious values and to continue practicing the sayings of the Quran.

In Surah An-Nas we are told by our only creator not to fear anything except him. This alone is a struggle for most.

From Russia with love.

There is no hurt any human can survive except the hurt of the one he very loves.

People whom come between us often do not realise that the worst thing they can do is to seperate our souls apart. God has willed that I will marry. There is nothing any creation of Allah can do to stop this.

May Allah have mercy to those whom oppose and act as go betweens.

Out with the old, In with the new.

Its truly innaugarating to be blessed. I praise the lord for giving me an oppurtunity to set the score to 0.

There are people in and out of family whom will continue to be overzealous in their efforts to control the nation. They are blind not to see that the nation we live in are getting smarter and more knowlegable each day.

It is now clear that those with expected skill sets and credibility should take over our forefathers role in this blessed life. Tunku and Tuanku sacrificed not money in the early days, they sacrificed their lives for the nation. They too knew that life was short and that eternity awaits us there.

Here's to a new year and Selamat Hari Raya to all.
